Millipedes have segmented bodies with two pairs of legs on each of the segments whereas the similar looking centipedes only have one pair on each segment. In contrast to centipedes, millipedes are harmless to man and are often found on damp and dark forest floors, as they feed mostly on decaying vegetation. Some species can grow up to 25 cm whereas others are tiny with less of 1 cm body length. When threatened, they curl up in a tight ball and use stink glands, whose secretions repel or even can kill some of their insect predators.
