The large and deep lake
was formed in an old
volcanic caldera of the Mojanda complex, located in the
Western Cordilleras between Otavalo and Tabacundo. The smaller
lakes are more typical shallow paramo ponds. Water in all
those lakes gathered through continous accumulations of rain drops
and no rivers feed them. They are located at around 3600m
and are bird refuges visited seasonally by various shore and water
birds.
