The twin peaks of the Ilinizas are remnants of the same volcano after its cataclysmic eruption millions of years ago, which blew everything else away. The southern peak at 5230m has a permanent ice field whereas the lower northern one at 5126m only has occasional snow fields. Iliniza Sur was first ascended by the Italian brothers Juan Antonio and Luis Carrel but this time without their leader Edward Whymper.
