Pichincha is the volcano at whose foot Quito, the captial of Ecuador and a city of 2 million people, is situated. Rucu, which means "Old Man" in Quechua is the old extinct volcano closer to the city whereas Guagua means "Baby" and indicates therefore an active volcano, which had several eruptions in the fall of 1999 covering Quito several times with ashes. Between the two peaks is another lower one called El Padre Encantador or "Enchanted Father".
