Agaves originate from the warm Caribbean islands and Central America.
In Ecuador they can be found in the drier areas of the Andean valleys.
They are grown commercially for their natural fibers and in Mexico,
tequila is made from one of the plant's sap.
They bloom only once in their lifetime and that can sometimes
take up to twenty years, that's probably the reason they are also
called century plants. The mother plant dies then but suckers from it keep on growing but they
may also propagate by seeds.
