Machala and its port sister town of Puerto Bolivar is a modern city of over 200 000 people located south of Guayaquil. It is also known as the banana capital of the world as 80% of Ecuador's export of this tropical fruit goes through there. Therefore the city's flat hinterland is surrounded by huge banana plantations and along the beach you find mangroves intermingled with shrimp farms.
